Against the Odds: The Artists of the Harlem Renaissance
A newly digitized version of “Against the Odds: The Artists of the Harlem Renaissance.” Narrated by Emmy Award-winning actor Joe Morton, this national PBS documentary premiered in 1993. It focuses on the often overlooked visual artists of the Harlem Renaissance, as opposed to its better known writers and musicians.
Produced and directed by Amber Edwards, the hour-long documentary was prompted by a landmark exhibition at the Newark Museum in 1990: “Against the Odds: African-American Artists and the Harmon Foundation.” Included are rare interviews with Harlem Renaissance artists James Lesesne Wells (1902-1993), Allan Rohan Crite (1910-2007), and Lois Mailou Jones (1905-1998).
Additional interviews include curators Gary A. Reynolds and Beryl J. Wright, historians David Levering Lewis, Arnold Rampersad, Matthew Baigell, and Clement A. Price.

The Art of Impressionism
Courbet and his followers rejected the standard academic themes and techniques, Manet shocked Paris, and Impressionists represented the world bathed in color and changing light. Post-Impressionists Seurat, Van Gogh, Gauguin, and Cézanne broke new ground with daring and imaginative use of color and approaches to form.

International in scope and diverse in artistic output, both Dada and Surrealism were artistic, literary and intellectual movements of the early 20th century that were instrumental in defining Modernism. The Dada movement, launched in 1916 in Zurich by poets and artists such as Tristan Tzara and Hans Arp, was a direct reaction to the slaughter, propaganda and inanity of World War I.
After the war, many of the artists who had participated in the Dada movement began to practice in a Surrealist mode. Surrealism was officially inaugurated in 1924 when the writer André Breton published the Manifesto of Surrealism. Similar to Dada, Surrealism was characterized by a profound disillusionment with and condemnation of the Western emphasis on logic and reason.
